Dental Exams & Cleanings

A routine cleaning and exam in Peoria: professional removal of plaque and tartar, a full check for decay and gum disease, and a clear picture of where you stand.

A cleaning and exam is the appointment everything else is measured against. Most people need one twice a year; some need them more often, and if that is you, we will tell you why rather than simply booking you in more frequently.

What the appointment involves

  • Removal of plaque and tartar, including from below the gumline where brushing cannot reach
  • Polishing to lift surface stain from coffee, tea and tobacco
  • A tooth-by-tooth examination for decay, cracks and failing older fillings
  • A check of your gums for the early signs of periodontal disease
  • An examination of the soft tissue of your mouth, tongue and throat
  • X-rays when they are needed to see what an examination cannot

If it has been a while

People who have been away from the dentist for years often expect a telling-off. You will not get one. A long gap is a very common reason for a first visit, and the appointment is about working out what is in front of us and what to do first — not about the years in between.

Common questions

How often should I have a cleaning?
Every six months suits most adults and children. If you have a history of gum disease or a high rate of decay, more frequent visits may be recommended — and we will explain the reason rather than just the interval.
Does a cleaning hurt?
For most people it is uncomfortable at worst, usually around the gumline. Tell us if you are sensitive and we can adjust. If your gums are inflamed, cleaning is often what stops the soreness rather than what causes it.
Can I bring my children to the same visit?
Yes. This is a family practice and scheduling family members together is usually possible. Call the office and we will arrange it around the hours we are open.
